31 October, 2013 - Pokhara

Trekking day 11 - last day of the trek! We only had to go a short distance this morning – about 1 hour for us to descend on stone stairs about 1,500 feet. We still passed by a handful of children singing and dancing for the Diwali festival and paid our Rupees to pass them on the trail – it’s a good thing their fees are reasonable. J Very thick, humid air as we descended on the steps – sweating until the end! Due to the intensity of the national elections coming up this November, the Maoists weren’t allowing normal buses to run so Pemba Sherpa called and got us a “tourist bus” to take us to Pokhara. It’s hard to believe that our trek is finished! It’s always a bittersweet ending, and we will surely miss our very kind and hardworking Sherpas and porters who provided us with wonderful guiding, excellent service, answers to our many questions, and big smiles and laughter. Once at our hotel in Pokhara we said goodbye to Ngawang Sherpa and Mingmar Sherpa – who left to take a bus back home to Kathmandu, and Deep – who left to take a bus back home to the Chitiwan area.

Back in Pokhara we all had nice, hot showers. Very nice to have a bed to sleep in without having to pull out our sleeping bags – the luxuries of life! We walked around Pokhara a bit and then took a teeny, tiny taxi car to the International Mountain Museum which had exhibits on the different people of Nepal and their culture, the highest peaks in Nepal (of course much on Mt. Everest) and many other aspects of the mountains – a very nice museum to visit. Of course on our walk around the grounds Mike got chased down by a seemingly mellow bull – we’re sorry we didn’t get video of this. We had a nice dinner together and watched a Nepali cultural dance show which depicted different dances for different Nepali cultures. A nice end to our trip.
