30 October, 2013 - Trek to Dhampus

Wow, only one more day of trekking left – and we only have about 1 ½ hours of walking before we hit the highway. We left Landruk this morning around 8am since we had no rush to get anywhere. We started heading out of the Annapurna Sanctuary area and slowly increased in elevation about 1,500 feet. We had a nice lunch at Pothana, and then descended a bit to a village called Dhampus where we will spend the night. With our ups and downs today we’ve actually ended-up about 100 feet higher than we slept last night, but we’re pretty low for our standards. With this level of humidity, we claim low altitude sickness (air is too thick)! We’re still getting very nice weather and clouds in the afternoon so we’re not sure what view we’ll have from here until we get up in the morning. Today we came across multiple groups of children singing a traditional Hindu song and blocking our trail until we paid them! This is a tradition that’s part of the 5-day Hindu festival, Diwali. Our Sherpa asked them what they will use the money for and they told him “a picnic.”  Ke Garne (what to do)? So we’ve been handing over Rupees equaling 10-50 cents for passage. During tea this afternoon it was fun for us to sit outside and watch as the children blocked the trail as other trekkers passed through – hopefully we have enough Rupees to make it to the road! Tomorrow will be a short walk and then a bus ride to Pokhara. The time has flown by!
