Lhotse Expedition

13th April, 2012 - Pheriche (13,911 ft.) to Lobuche (16,175)

It was clear this morning when we got up at 6 AM.  Our plan was to move on up to Lobuche today so our bags needed to be ready early for the porters.  We had breakfast and were ready to go by 7:30 AM.  Terri was feeling better and was ready for a pretty long day.

The hike out of Pheriche is almost always windy and today was no exception.  After 2 hours we reached the climb that takes you up to Duglha.  I have not seen any change since my first trip through Duglha.  As usual it was loaded with trekkers and climbers catching a break on their way to or from Lobuche.  We also stopped and had hot drinks.

After Duglha there is a moderate climb up to and area on the old Khumbu glacier moraine that has many memorials for those that have died on Everest.  It is a very beautiful location and is hard for one not to be effected by the feel of the area.

The trail gradient eases off and within a few more hours we arrive at Lobuche at 2 PM.  We again had some hot drinks waiting for our porters.  They arrived at 3 PM and Pasang helped us get moved into our room.  I spent some time sorting out gear and clothing for climbing Lobuche East (19,805 ft.).  This will help my acclimatization for Lhotse.  We will hike up to advance base camp (17,500 ft.) in the morning.  On the follow day we will climb up Lobuche East and then back down to Lobuche.  Terri will get a couple well earned rest days at Lobuche.  Hopefully that will help her make it up to EBC.
