Lhotse Expedition

7th April, 2012 - Namche (11,306) to Dole (13,399)

It was mostly cloudy, but) the previous nights snow was gone.  After breakfast we said our goodbyes to the Krapf group and headed off for Dole about 8:30 AM.  Our route today would cover 7 ½ miles and gain 2,093 ft.  We moved along slowly on the short climb out of Namche.  Once out of Namche the pace was still slow mainly due to the large number of trekkers and Zopkyo’s (a cross between a yak and a cow).  Terri was also not feeling very good due to the typical traveler’s problem.

We left the main trail up to Everest Base Camp (EBC) shortly after Kyangjuma.  At this point the trail is much smaller with very few animals or people.  The trail climbed steadily with a few descents on up to Mong at 13,935 ft.  We stopped for lunch but Terri was not very hungry – this section of the trail had been pretty hard on her.
Unfortunately the trail descended steeply after Mong down to the Dudh Koshi River losing about 1,000 ft.  As is often the case in the Khumbu you gain and lose elevation often.  At the bottom of this descent we entered the Goyko Valley.  The trail began to climb again on our way to Dole, but not as steeply as the descent.  We moved along slowly gaining 1,400 ft. reaching Dole at 2:30 PM.

Our lodge (Himalaya) was comfortable and the food was good.  Terri was very tired and not able to eat very much.  At this point we had to discuss options for the next few days.  If we move on and go over Cho La Pass (17,782 ft.) we will all need to be feeling fit.
