5th April, 2013- Liz reporting on Everest Base Camp Arrival Day

The Kala Patthar group arrived at base camp around 4:30pm on 4/5.  It was to be a 4-hour tour, then turned 8-hour tour (as a result of ice melt, glacier breakage and therefore, trail disappearance), and was the pinnacle (or in Clay’s words, the climax) of   the 2013 WMS Everest Experience.  Alena, Glen, Jim, Chris, Pranav, Clay and Ied expertly by Sherpas Dorji, Nima Dorji and Pasang, made it to the top of Kala Patthar “vistati…vistati” (slowly), reaching a maximum altitude of 18,600+ feet (5669 + meters)! At the summit, Clay gave Kate Upton a run for her SI Swimsuit cover money with his speedo photo-shoot backdropped by the most stunning views of Everest.  The ‘down’ from Kala Patthar proved to be the trek that almost didn’t end.  The group shared carb-laden snacks and used every last bit of energy trekking, watching the Khumbu ice fall and the tents at Everest Base Camp get bigger and bigger, but somehow they were still so far away.  After fantasizing about hobnobs and cappuccino, brownies and ice cold coca-cola, like a mirage, Djiku Sherpa appeared with a thermos  full of hot Sherpa Tea (milk tea) and digestif biscuits.  Chris termed this experience an HTBO (ask him for details, but we all agreed).

We walked into our Peak Promotions camp where we were presented with kada and warm hugs from our fellow trekkers Laura and Deja.  Suzi and Kirsty were hard at work organizing the Everest ER with some help from Sam, Beanie and Barry.  Peak Promotions continues to be attentive as ever, feeding us a late lunch of sardines, grilled cheese and fries (I’m ALWAYS a sucker for fries, but especially at elevation 5400 meters).  Later we had a delicious dinner of veg momos (the collective group’s fave) and spaghetti.  Some slept well, some did not, some slept warm, some did not, some had headaches, and some did not.  But we all awoke to tea-in-sleeping bag, surrounded by the gorgeous Himalayan Mountains, sun shining, ready for pancakes and fried eggs.  We sent positive energy to our fellow trekker, sick in Gorak Shep, hi-fiving him for the journey he made.

Namaste and Hugs

Laura sends a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to her brother!
