Yesterday night, we fell asleep to the sounds of a Sherpa party that we were not invited to. But, the idea of summiting Peaky Peak kept us placated, and we all went to sleep dreaming about seeing Everest the next day. At 5AM, Chief Phula made the announcement that the weather was completely bad and that we would not be able to go to Peaky Peak that day. With a tear, we all went back to sleep. When we woke up, the sun was out, and Chief made a last minute decision to summit Peaky Peak! Though it was a hard hike, we were able to see some great views. It was as if we were standing on top of the clouds.
After breakfast, we hiked through cow pastures and made our way towards lunch. After lunch, we hiked towards our campsite for the day. Nima, of course, charged ahead and kept track of everyone with his sonar hearing. Grace, Yvonne, and Kim got lost and met a mysterious boy who will haunt Yvonne tonight in her dreams. Apparently the boy insists that he didn’t see them even though he clearly did. When we got to the campsite, we all sat down for tea, and DJ Ngawang took out his phone to play some music. We also learned that Phula’s nickname .
Jennifer got a little high altitude sickness, and the amazing guides carried her up to Peaky Peak and then back down the mountain and all the way to the campsite. My respect for the guides has increased infinitely, and they all get an A+ and a standing ovation for the day. I feel so privileged to be hiking with a group of people with such big hearts, and I’ve learned so much from them: with a little bit of willpower, hope, and a lot of chang, you can really find happiness everywhere.
To my sister in Europe, I expect a necklace when I get home. To my mom in China, see you in a few weeks! To my poor dad holding the fort back home, don’t have too much fun J To all the family and friends reading this, we are all safe and well! One more day, and we will be in Chyangba!
To Chief Phula, I expect an invitation to the party tonight!
