04 April, 2008

The storm raged as the intrepid climbers battles freezing winds and poor visibility to reach Imjatse’s elusive summit…….wait!!

That’s very dramatic, but not quite accurate. The weather was fine, the Sherpa guides were strong, but Chet had underestimated the severity of his illness and its aftermath . Instead he chose to descend after less than two hours climbing, fatigued and coughing, He returned to the warmth of his sleeping bag and few more hours sleep after reaching no more than 17,800 feet. Later that morning the team returned to Chukhung to meet Terri and Dick. They packed up and all hiked to the lodge at Dingboche for yak steak, beer and best of all ….. a hot bath!

Looking back, one can see why Imjatse was named Island Peak by early western climbers. It is small by Himalayan standards, but this beautiful “Island” is reefed by glaciers and surrounded by an ocean of Himalayan giants: Nuptse, Lhotse, Baruntse and Ama Dablam.
