Our hike today took us from Debuche (3770 meters) up to Dingboche (4350 meters).
From Debuche the trail was in the shade of Ama Dablam and there was a fresh ducting of snow during the night. The snow melted quickly as the sun came up. We started out at about 8 AM. By 10 AM we reached Pangboche Gompa.

At the Gompa we had a Puja with the local Lama. The Lama prayed for our safety on the trek and climb. Each of us received a Khada along with prayer sheets with prayers written by the Lama. The Lama also gave our two Sherpa’s and Me Lungdar for safety on the mountain along with cards to take to the summit for him. The tradition is to take summit pictures with the cards the Lama wrote for us. Then send the Lama a copy of the picture. There were many pictures on the walls of the Lakhang of the Lama’s cards on the summit of Everest.

 

After the Puja we walked on to Shomare where we had lunch. The weather was typical again today. Clear and cold in the mourning and than the clouds form over the surrounding peaks. The wind also increased through the morning. By noon we had a steady wind of about 15 to 20 mph.

 

 

After leaving Shomare we were above all trees and shrubs so there was little to break the wind. Today was the first day that more than T shirts had to be worn while hiking. Throughout the day the trail was rocky with many stone steps on the steeper sections.

We arrived at Dingboche at 1 PM and were given our rooms at the Hotel Family Dingboche. Our porters had not arrived yet so we rested and had some tea.

The last couple day Terri has been fighting a cold. It is very easy to pick up something on this trek into base camp. I have got a bit of the Khumbu cough so common among all the locals, trekkers and climbers.

Tomorrow is a rest day here at Dingboche. After little sleep last night in a noisy and crowded lodge the extra sleep will be welcome. The only activity planned for tomorrow is an easy hike up Nangakarsang Peak (5083 meters) located above Dingboche.
