26 March, 2008

This is our layover day in Namche. After breakfast we hiked up to the Sagarmatha National Park information center to view the displays on history and points of interest in the park. There is also an airstrip now used only by helicopters to deliver people and supplies to Namche and the Everest View Hotel

The Everest View Hotel was built by the Japanese and sits high above Namche with a view of the mountains. We had beautiful views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse and Everest. We all had a drink of hot lemon on the deck of the Everest View Hotel and then walked back down to the Khumbu Lodge where we are staying. We had lunch and than walked the narrow streets of Namche looking at the many shops full of climbing gear and (inji minji) jewelry and other various Tibetan goods. Some last minute climbing items were purchased and also some rubs for sore muscles.

From the lodge we have been watching the progress of two local construction projects. One hotel is expanding and another new hotel is being built. About 25 to 30 workers are out sunrise to sunset making granite rocks into square rectangles for the walls. The outside finish is as good as any machine cut in the states. Dirt is being hauled by baskets carried on their backs and rebar is bent by hand. It will be fun to see the progress when we come back through.

We would all like to thank Vegas Fuel for their support of this cybercast. We look forward to Rob Diehl joining us later in April. He will have a chance to introduce folks in Nepal to Vegas Fuel up at base camp and when we return to Kathmandu.
