24 March, 2008

This was our day to leave Kathmandu, fly to Lukla and began the trek to Everest base camp.

However, it started slower than expected. We arrived at the airport at 6:30 am ready to go, but it wasn't until 1:30pm that we finally boarded our plane. Winds kept our 15- 18 passenger plan from leaving sooner. We made the 30 minutes flight over rivers, farmland, steep rocky hills and clouds. We dropped through the clouds to land on a short slanted runway. After lunch in Lukla the porters set off and we began our trek at 4:30pm. The trail was rocky and easy to follow as it passed through many beautiful villages, woods with rhododendrons flowering trees in bloom and crossed the river on a high suspension bridges. It started to rain as we came into Phakding ready for dinner and a good night's sleep.
