18th April , 2012 -Pheriche to Lobuche via Thukla

Yesterday HRA held a really good lecture on acute mountain sickness. They also presented a couple of recent cases they had seen on the clinic. Almost all of them seem to have gotten sick on the way from Pheriche to Lobuche. Therefore we were all on high alert today as we were about to break the 16000ft barrier.  We started off with walking the long valley up to Thokla where we had lunch. During the trek some of us learned the noble art of maneuvering a yak. You shout out a distinctive Cho! Then you whistle and slap the animal on the rump. It all seemed to work.

A lot of us were slightly worried about the lunch in Thokla; prior groups have had problem with GI tract infections after eating at this place. That information had not reached me; I ate the whole plate with momos and everything. Just as I had finished my meal I learned about it. Wongchu said the food was okay though and so far I am feeling fine.

After lunch we did a steep trek up to Lobuche which is situated at almost 5000 meters. That for me as the only non-American in the group means a lot more to me than > 16000 ft.

After arrival we were once again greeted with tea. Then Wongchu brought us even higher up the hill for a short trek. The concept is: hike high, sleep low. From Lobuche we have a wonderful view of Nuptse which is a very impressive mountain.

We are all tired but happy after today’s trek.  Tomorrow we are heading for Gorak Shep!
