20th April , 2012 - We made it!

We made it!  Sitting at Everest Base Camp now with full bellies and burrowed into the kitchen tent which we affectionately have named the aloha tent (the sherpas have hung colorful cloth flowers everywhere).  It is 7:45 pm and we enjoyed a very full day.  We started our hike from Gorak Shep, breaking into two hiking groups to accommodate folks feeling a little tired.  One group of 4 plus Sherpa headed straight to base camp (still a healthy 5 hour hike).  The rest of us began our steep ascent to Kala Patthar –the highest point we will reach on the trip at 18,200’.  It was extraordinary!  We could see a ton of peaks; Everest, Pumori, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and a whole host of others!!  The most impressive and new experience today I think was the birds-eye view of the Kumbu Ice Fall.  WOW!  We could see the colored tents of B.C. and felt we would be there before we knew it.  We snapped a thousand pictures and did more “Group Photos” in an effort to try and encapsulate the unique landscape our eyes could barely comprehend.   Just as the scale of the mountains have been deceiving, so was the quick trek to camp…. We trekked and trekked and trekked.  The ground under foot tested our hiking skills to the max.  We walked in perfect lines through alpine tundra, bounced and wobbled through challenging boulder and screw fields, and finally skipped onto the slippery glacier trails.  We wondered who had the best shoes for such varied terrain—conclusion:  the Yaks!  Our mouths gaped open for many reasons including the thin air, the grand Himalayas, the spontaneous avalanches from a safe distance, the yak woman throwing rocks at the camera, the porter carrying the poop bucket who almost tripped onto me, the Peak Promotion Sherpas randomly appearing on the trail with lemon juice and cookies and hot tea.  They are exceptional people and we feel so grateful to have them looking after us. Everyone is doing well.  We are looking forward to a long night’s sleep in our sturdy tents.
