Chhukung
13th April, 2014 - Kongma La pass

Our group parted as we left Chhukhung this morning under flawless blue skies: Ron & Alice electing to take the historic route back down to Pheriche to join the main route toward Everest Base Camp.  Meanwhile Ed, Mark & Todd climbed up to high meadows affording last amazing views of Ama Dablam, air growing thinner.  We saw Nepali Ptarmigan and took it slow and steady, each step a meditation, clouds rising from surrounding mountains.  Past house sized boulders and frozen lakes up to the snow zone for a short lunch stop before scrambling the final rock band to the highest point on our trek: the mighty Kongma La pass at 5535 meters.  Short pause for photos as clouds swirled in concealing surrounding peaks and blowing first snow flakes, then a long slippery descent over 2” of fresh snow blanketing loose black scree.  From the moment we crested the pass we could see our destination of Lobuche at once seeming close and impossibly far below.  Down, down each step a mystery to the edge of the massive moraine pushed up by the Khumbu glacier, which we climbed a couple hundred feet up to discover that the trail across the moraine had collapsed into a hundred yard sink hole.  Balancing act picking our way through loose gravel and powdery silt and boulders of every size, past gaping crevasses and lovely frozen blue lakes.  Climb and descend through the maze of rubble carried down from Everest and surrounding peaks up, down and around a half dozen hills: Big Glacier!!  Climb the final rise and gaze down on the main road to Everest Base Camp crawling with trekkers.  Welcome to the party!
