12th May 2013 - Trek to Tengboche

Around midnight many of us woke up due to noise of thunder. A look outside the window and we could see lightning around. It rained for almost 3 hours. Morning time and the weather were still a bit cloudy. But by the time we assembled for breakfast the sky was absolutely clear. We could see snow all around us.... not where we were staying but on the mountain behind us where we had gone for the hike yesterday may be just 50 meters above us.

We left the lodge at 7.30 and after a brief climb traversed the mountain behind us. The moment we reached the other side of the mountain at around 8.15 we could see the similar view that we saw yesterday. From here we could see Kangde, Kusum Kangaru, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Mt. Everest and Thamserku peaks. The sky was very clear and the view was much better than yesterday. From here we could see Everest for about the next hour or so of our trail. We reached Phunki Thanga at 11.15. Here we had our lunch. Phunki is a very small village on the banks of Doodh Kosi River. So here we were back on the banks after we left the river after Jorsale. The trail till here was mostly downhill and in the last 3.75 hours we had lost about 190 meters.

After lunch we crossed the bridge over the river and then began another ascent to Thyangboche. The climb was not as steep as Jorsale-Namache, but still quite a bit. The route however was fabulous with Rhododendron Trees all over. Rhododendron is the National flower of Nepal and it comes in various shares of Red. To our right appeared Kangtega peak. The top of this peak appears like a Shivaling, all of snow.  We reached Thyangboche (3867 meters) at 2.30 after about 2 hours that saw us climb 617 meters. The town was absolutely clean with no traces of the snowfall of last night.

In the evening we saw the Monastry here at Thyangboche. It is quite big and beautiful. Then after a brief stroll in the village and visit to the Bakery (they claim to be the highest in the world) we returned to the restaurant.

Tomorrow we plan Dingboche that will be about 660 meters higher than Tengboche.
