on the way down to Lukla

April 21th, 2011- Down to Lukla from Namche Bazaar

Today we hiked down to Lukla from Namche Bazaar to finish our 13 day trek behind the able leadership of Ang Dawa Sherpa. We crossed many bridges, walked over many yak dung piles, and saw many amazing sights, but we didn’t see what we came to see: Anders falling down on a pile of jagged rocks. He tripped several times today, as he had “civilization fever” and I got excited when I heard someone fall down the rock stairs behind us. Unfortunately however, a French hiker fell instead of Anders. Can’t win them all.

Namche in the Lodge

In all seriousness, it was a beautiful day of hiking. The wildlife and florae are much richer at lower elevations. Also, the vistas we saw today were as we’ve been used to: spectacular. We spent some time looking over the pictures from the trip after getting to Lukla, and it’s amazing what we’ve been able to see in a short time, and I think it’s safe to say we’re all going to miss the trees. Well, at least the yaks.

The Highest Bridge Below Namche

I think we’re in agreement that it seems like we just got here, the trek wasn’t as touristy as anticipated (above Namche), and it was particularly fascinating to watch the environment change with altitude. I know some of the pictures look great, but it’s just impossible to get the scale of the Himalayas with a camera. Our group combined has been pretty much everywhere in the world, and nobody is leaving this trip unimpressed with what they’ve seen or done.

Near the Lukla

We owe a special thanks to the porters, without whom we would have had no chance of completing this. It was nice to be able to tip them in person. Also, we thank our assistant guide and budding standup comic Ang Ngwang Sherpa who also reached a personal best altitude at 5:00am with Par on Kala Patthar. And last but far from least we owe special thanks to Ang Dawa who didn’t come close to breaking a sweat and who we’ve all grown to like personally.
