  6th November, 2010 - From Pheriche

At 4 am it was still dark outside and the sky was painted with stars. We were prepared with headlights and warm gloves and began our trek to the highest point on our journey. Mt Kalapathar at 5560 m. It was a thrilling experience walking in the cold dark. When looking down at the other trekkers (yes they were behind us…) it looked like a trail of glowing caterpillars. But oh my goodness it was so tough, some extra oxygen and a cup of coffee would have been nice. The reward waited at the top, as in watching the sun rise over Everest (In Tibetan language Chomolong) and the other magnificent mountains. Back at the teahouse we had some breakfast before we began our long journey down towards Lukla, were we started. On the way me met people that crossed our path earlier. Among others, A lonesome traveler from Hamburg and the Canadians, John and Bob who had taken a different route from ours. It was a pleasant day since we finally were going downhill. Baba was cheerfully chatting with the people going upwards “Oh its MUCH tougher going down you now” and “just a few more steps you are almost there…”. A tired old Japanese man seemed very pleased when Baba said that “You look strong today”. He said thank you repeatedly and then burst out in laughter. Our teahouse for the night (in Pheriche at 4200 m) is equipped with boat heat AND light in the common room. At first it felt like this was a bit too luxurious for us simple trekkers but what the hekk, you only live once right? It’s now 8 pm and time to hit the sack.

Goodnight from Lisa and Baba
