4th November, 2011 - Trek to Tirkedhunga

Today we woke up at the hotel in Pokhara, had breakfast, and took a 1:30 hour bus ride to the trail head at Nayapul. We got all our gear together and headed off – we were trekking at last! The Sherpas went ahead with our bags – one of them carrying 3 duffel bags of gear and still moving much faster than we were – amazing!

We walked along a well maintained path that wandered through several villages and passed beautifully terraced fields of rice, millet, and buckwheat.  The path followed the river and we saw several waterfalls as we climbed higher into the misty mountains. We had an excellent lunch at a tea-house a few miles down the path. The food was far better and more varied that any of us had expected.

After another couple of hours and about 500M of altitude gain we ended the trek at Tirkedhunga, a village near a small waterfall that has a number of tea-houses. We are staying in the Chandra guest house where we watched the IMAX movie about climbing Everest, and had an excellent dinner. Dal bhat is delicious! Tomorrow we go on a much longer trek with about 1300M of altitude gain.

Our guide checked and flights are still not making it to Lukla - we definitely made the correct choice in switching our plans to the Annapurna region.
