Group in Kathmandu

31st October, 2011 - Sightseeing in Kathmandu and preparation day for trekking
After breakfast at the hotel we were taken on a tour of Kathmandu by our tour guide Murrari. We first visited a 2500 year old stupa and temple at Swoyambhunath; famous for the large number of monkeys that live there. Next our heroic driver braved Kathmandu's traffic again to take us to the temple and cremation site at Pashupatinath, located on a tributary of the Ganges. Here most of the dead in Kathmandu are cremated in the open area, and then have their ashes dumped into the river. Two cremations were started as we watched.

We next drove to a very large Stupa at Boudhanath where we spend some time exploring, then had lunch at a restaurant with a view of the temple grounds. Then it was on to Patan Darbur square and its many buildings with impressively ornate carvings.

We returned to the hotel in the late afternoon, and after meeting with our mountain guide (Pemba), packed our gear for a very early morning departure tomorrow. We are all very much looking forward to beginning our trek tomorrow (weather permitting).
