Chumrung - Annapurna Base Camp Trekking - Daily Dispatches

10th November, 2011 - Annapurna Base Camp

After a breakfast of oatmeal, Nikon camera instructions to the Canon person (Chris), we had a bittersweet moment where 3 of us would head uphill with our lead guide Pemba and one porter, and Joe would head down to Bamboo with Niehma, our assistant guide, and the other porter.  We are glad to be heading into the high mountains and the Annapurna cirque, but sad that Joe is not joining us.  We sure hope he is feeling better when we meet up again tomorrow night!

Our trek today was mostly consistent uphill as we left trees and bushes behind us, gradually rounding a lower mountain as Machhapuchhre Base Camp (10,500 ft) came into view.  We stopped there at 10:30 to leave our gear in our room, lighten our backpacks, and have a small midmorning meal staring at Annapurna South, before heading off to Annapurna Base Camp.

The trail to A.B.C. was smooth and gradual compared to any of our prior treks.  We crossed open fields as we were well above treeline.   Annapurna South grew larger, and the other peaks in the range came into view: Annapurna III, Annapurna I, Gangapurna, and Tent Peak. After 90 min, we reached A.B.C. and got a great view of the dirt covered glacier in front of Annapurna, her summit looming 12,000 ft above us even as we were already at 13,180 ft.  We had tea and spent some time wandering to get better views of the glacier and took many, many pictures before heading back to M.B.C. for the night.
