1 November, 2013 - Trek to Tilicho Base Camp

Hello to all my family, friends and blog readers,

In our great journey through the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal, today we trekked from Manang 3540 m to Tilicho Base Camp 4150 m. We began our trek from the Hotel Himalayan Singi at 7:35 am, however our group has split up and will be achieving different goals over the next three days. The team that I am with is made up of Dave, Rich, Ray, Martin and myself and we headed to Tilicho – our trusty sherpas for this section are Passan and Ngwang. A team of three men, Joel, Mark and Kobus headed to the Chulu region for some climbing with their sherpas. And my roommate, Sheila, will be spending a few days in Manang for some rest and recovery of a sore back. Manang was a great village that offered the most services, shops and bakeries that I have seen so far.

We followed the Marsyangdi River for most of the day and had amazing views of the Annapurna IV and Gangapura Mtns and Tilicho Peak.  We saw many yaks grazing in the fields with horses. I noticed a farmer milking one of the yaks. The trail is a quiet one with no motorbikes which I found to be quite pleasant. We passed through Khangsar village where a Buddhist Monk could be heard chanting over a loud speaker.  The vegetation today was mostly low shrubs and as we gained elevation, the terrain was mostly bare.

We had lunch at Hotel Tilicho Peak in Sheree Kharka 4076 m. The men were envious of my Dahlbat lunch while they had fried potatoes and pasta.  Back on the trail, we crossed a suspension bridge (I'm definitely getting used to them by now and no longer cross them with fear!!), and started heading up on dusty, dry switchbacks that were quite a challenge (at least for me). The trail soon passed along steep ridges with lots of scree. The men seemed to enjoy this new challenge, but I found this section to be quite harrowing. Looking down or at the views was only done in areas where I could hold onto a rock or knew that my footing was steady. We passed through an area with a warning of landslides…it didn't help me to see that sign!! At one point, I saw small rocks coming down from above – I crossed the section when I thought it was safe, but still managed to get hit in the side. Later on, I found out that it was one of those horned blue sheep that was on the ridge above that caused the rocks to come down near me.

We reached our destination, the Tilicho Base Camp hotel at about 3 pm. Although it is cold and very windy outside, the lodge is quite pleasant considering its location between the mountains. Tomorrow is expected to be a long day, so we will all be in our cozy sleeping bags early for a good night of sleeping.

Namaste,
