29 October, 2013 - Trek to Chame

Today's scribe- Dave McCormick

After 10 days in the Nepali backcountry, our return to civilization and the modern world was rapid and exciting for several reasons.  Even at the end of a rough jeep track that we think ends where we are, in Chame, we now have cell phone coverage, internet access, shops selling wool hats and "North Face" items and a larger selection of good food.

I think most of us would be somewhat embarrassed to admit the degree to which we enjoyed  returning to some of those trappings of the modern world, but there you are.

Everyone who could phoned home, downloaded their e-mail, posted blogs and strolled the street looking at the wares on sale.  The food for supper was pretty much the best yet.

The day was uneventful, being a hike partly on that jeep track, often climbing steeply about 800 meters between Dharapani  and Chame.  We climbed into a different world.

Chame is right under Annapurna II, one of the sub 8000 m peaks.  It literally soars high over Chame.  The Marsyangdi River roars below.

Tomorrow we move on.   More scenery on tap.
