17 October, 2013 - Drive to Arughat

Kathmandu. The adventure begins.  Actually, it wasn't supposed to start till Friday.  It started a half day early.
We met for breakfast at the Yak and Yeti at 6:30 am.  It was a great breakfast and it was great to see everyone had made it in.  This was the first time all ten of us were together at one time as a couple stragglers only got into the hotel late on Wednesday.   After breakfast we mustered in the lobby for a last talk with Wongchu Sherpa.  He gave us specific instructions:  stay together, go slow, and listen to your main guide Pasang Sherpa.  He gave us these instructions many times just in case we were not paying attention.

The bus ride out of Kathmandu was uneventful.  The adventure started when we left the main highway between Kathmandu and Pokhara and turned north towards Arughat.  The road was narrow, real narrow, single car garage narrow.  But that did not seem to deter buses, Lorries, and the odd four by four from heading up know the same were heading down.  So up we go, twisting and turning on a dirt track; much like logging roads in BC only narrow.

Passing other buses was, well, interesting.  It reminded me of porcupines courting; slow, deliberate, and with lots of communication taking place.  When we met other buses coming down, invariably on a corner of course, we would negotiate a short dance.  Usually we moved left, but not always.  Sometimes we move forward, sometimes not.  Backwards was not infrequent.  But we always got past with no injury, no fouls words, and no fear.  Ok, little fear..  Each successful pass was honoured with a happy honking of horns.  Then we roared onto the next corner.

Eventually we got to Arughat.  126 kms in 6 hours.  Apparently that is good time.  That was enough adventure for the day.  The short walk into Arughat was a nice stretch of the legs and getting to the Manuslu Hotel a relief.  We are all ready for walking.
